What Paper is Best?
We offer a wide choice of papers but also realise it can be hard to know what will be best for your specific requirements. Read on to help lean the differences between the papers and printing processes to find the best solution for your next print.
C-Type Or Giclée Fine Art?
All prints produced by Tone can be broken in to two categories in the way that the image is produced a C-Type or Giclée Fine Art print.
C-Type Print is the abbreviation name of Chromagentic Type. Its a chemical process using sliver halide that reacts to light to create a colour image. C-Type printing is traditionally what photographers are used to printing on due to the continuous tone that this process gives to the image.
Giclée Fine Art Print is produced by the spraying extremely small droplets of ink onto specially coated paper to build a colour or black and white print. The name Giclée is a French term meaning “to spray”. The benefits of a Giclée Fine Art Print is larger choice of papers and a wider colour gamut than C – type prints.

C-Type Printing Process
All C-Type prints at tone are produced using the latest laser printers by Noritsu and Polyelectronic. These both use lasers and mirrors to “paint” the light onto the photographic paper.
The paper is then transferred to the developer tank where the chromogenic process takes place forming the image.
The image is then transferred to a bleach/fix solution which stops the chromogenic process fixes the image makes the paper no longer light sensitive.
The image is then passed to a series of wash and stabiliser tanks to wash away any remaining chemistry and then is dried.
We only use Fuji DP2 professional paper and chemistry for all our C-Type prints.
Giclée Fine Art
All our Giclée Fine Art prints are produced using the latest Epson large format printers and ink.
The chosen paper is loaded onto the printer and a print head moves over the image spraying tiny droplets of ink onto the paper during each pass forming the image.

Benifits Of Each
Both printing types are capable of producing stunning quality images. Their are some benifits both have over each other.
C-Type – A true photographic print offering extremely smooth tonal range perfect for skin tones and gradients.
Giclée Fine Art Process – A wider range of textured papers and a larger printing colour gamut giving more vivid colours.
